What is a material safety data sheet?
A material safety data sheet (MSDS) is a technical document or bulletin that summarizes the health and safety information available about a controlled product. It supplements a warning information label.
Regulated under Federal legislation Bill C70 and Ontario provincial legislation Bill 79 (WHMIS regulations are under the Industrial Regulation 860 is in OHSA green book)
The Ministry of Labour requires:
- That a new employee shall have WHMIS training within 10 days of beginning work.
- All employees shall have WHMIS training at least once every year.

OBJECTIVES
- Give employees a clear understanding of their obligation under the law.
- Develop appreciation of the potential dangers to their safety and the safety of fellow employees that may be present from use or handling of Hazardous Materials.
- Supply sufficient knowledge of the Classification of Hazardous Materials and the symbols used for quick identification.
- Supply sufficient knowledge of the purpose and use of proper labeling and an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet).
- Awareness of how workplace chemicals (hazardous materials) may enter and affect the body.
